RHETT GORDON
Director of Hockey Operations

Rhett Gordon was born and raised in Unity, Saskatchewan. He played his youth hockey in Unity before moving to Regina, SK to play in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Rhett spent three seasons in the WHL before signing a professional contract with the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets. He played professionally for 15 seasons, including stops in the AHL, IHL, and as a member of Team Canada. He also played in various professional leagues across Europe, including Denmark, Italy, Germany, and Great Britain. Rhett finished his playing career as a member of the Colorado Eagles. Some of Rhett’s playing accomplishments:

  • 1994 – Signed with Winnipeg Jets
  • 1995-96 – WHL Sportsman of the Year, Regina Pats Humanitarian of the Year, scored 53 goals, named to WHL All-Star Game
  • 1996 – Played seven exhibition games with the Phoenix Coyotes
  • 1999-2000 – Represented Team Canada at the Spangler Cup, Baltica Cup, and Sweden Games

Rhett was hired by NCYH in 2013 as a full time Hockey Director. He has worked with every age level, from Under 8s through high school. Rhett was named NCYH Director of Hockey Operations in 2016.  His teams have won numerous CCYHL playoff, regular season, and tournament championships.  Rhett was named the Pinnacle High School Coach of the Year in 2017.

SCOTT SWANSON
Hockey Director

Scott was born and raised in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. He played his youth and high school hockey in his hometown before moving to Omaha, NE to play two seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL). After being drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1995, Scott accepted a scholarship to Colorado College and enjoyed four successful seasons with the Tigers, playing in four national tournaments and two Frozen Fours. Scott played professionally for five seasons, with stops in Houston (IHL), South Carolina (ECHL), Springfield (AHL), Boise (WCHL), and with the Colorado Eagles. Some of Scott’s playing accomplishments:

  • 1993-94 – USHL First Team Defenseman
  • 1994-95 – USHL MVP, First Team Defenseman, Drafted by Washington Capitals
  • 1995-96 – All-WCHA Second Team, NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team, NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team
  • 1996-97 – NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team
  • 1997-98 – All-WCHA Third Team
  • 1998-99 – All-American First Team, All-WCHA First Team, WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year, led all NCAA defensemen in scoring
  • 1999-00 – Named to USHL’s Top 50 Players of All Time
  • 2001-2002 – WCHL Defenseman of the Year

Scott volunteered to coach with NCYH for five seasons before being hired as a full time Hockey Director in 2012. He has coached 3-4 competitive teams per season during his tenure as a Hockey Director. His teams have won a total of five CCYHL playoff championships and numerous regular season and tournament championships. 

RILEY NELSON
Hockey Director

Riley Nelson was born and raised in Cranbrook, British Columbia. He played his youth hockey with the Cranbrook Minor Hockey Association. After playing one season in the KIJHL with the Columbia Valley Rockies, Riley moved back home to play Jr. A for the RMJHL’s Cranbrook Colts. He accepted a scholarship to play in the WCHA for the Michigan Tech Huskies where he starred for four seasons. After completing his college eligibility, Riley signed with the Columbus Cottonmouths, beginning a 14-year professional career which also included stops in Knoxville (UHL), Missouri (UHL), Rochester (AHL), San Antonio (AHL), and 11 seasons with the Colorado Eagles. Some of Riley’s playing accomplishments:

  • 1997-98 – All Tournament Team at Great Lakes Invitational
  • 2003-04 – Scored the first goal in the history of the Colorado Eagles
  • 2006-07 – Named CHL Man of the Year
  • 2008-09 – First Team All-CHL
  • 2009-10 – First Team All-CHL
  • 2010-11 – CHL Regular Season MVP, First Team All-CHL
  • 2013 – Jersey retired by the Colorado Eagles

Riley joined NCYH as a Hockey Director in the fall of 2017 overseeing the Under 8 program, Under 8 Travel program, and Rec Teams.

KEVIN ULANSKI
Hockey Director

Kevin Ulanski was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. He played his youth hockey for the Westmoreland Saints Hockey Association and high school hockey at Madison West. After his senior year, Kevin played for the Billings Bulls of the America West Hockey League. He signed with DU and played four seasons with the Pioneers, captaining his team to two NCAA Division 1 National Championships. After college, Kevin played professionally for nine seasons, including stops with the Long Beach Ice Dogs (ECHL), Rockford Ice Hogs (UHL), Elmira Jackals (ECHL), Milwaukee Admirals (AHL), and Colorado Eagles (ECHL). Some of Kevin’s playing accomplishments:

  • 1999 and 2000 – First Team All-State Selection
  • 2001-02 – DU Freshman of the Year
  • 2004-05 – NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team
  • 2006-07 – UHL Playoff MVP
  • 2008-09 – First-Team All CHL Selection
  • 2009-10 – First-Team All CHL Selection, CHL Regular Season MVP, CHL Scoring Champion
  • 2011-12 – ECHL Sportsmanship Award Recipient

In the fall of 2017 Kevin joined NCYH as a Hockey Director. He coaches Squirt and Bantam Travel teams.
