DESCRIPTIONS OF LTS CLASSES

CHOOSING A LEVEL & WHAT TO EXPECT

Our classes build on one another, with each level developing skills needed for the next. New skaters should begin in the introductory class for their age. Returning skaters should use their most recent instructor recommendation when registering, however, will likely be evaluated by one of our directors or senior instructors.

Placement may be adjusted after an on-ice assessment to match current ability. Time away from skating and changes in growth or coordination can mean previously learned skills need additional practice.

Advancement is based on demonstrating the required skills consistently and with control. Completing a session does not guarantee advancement, and repeating a level is a normal, productive part of learning.

Group lessons include instructor demonstrations, feedback, and independent practice while coaches divide their attention among skaters. Every skater progresses at their own pace.

PARENT & TOT

A little play, a little practice, and those first steps toward feeling comfortable on the ice! Parent & Tot gives children 2-4yrs old a chance to explore skating with a familiar adult beside them.

This class is structured playtime with instructor guidance. Parents actively participate throughout class, helping their children explore the ice, try simple movements, and build confidence through games and activities. The focus is comfort and readiness for future lessons, rather than a formal, skill-by-skill curriculum or continuous individual instruction.

One skating adult is required per child. Adults must be comfortable skating forward and backward independently before enrolling.

SNOWPLOW SAM

Small steps build confident skaters! Snowplow Sam introduces children 4-6yrs old to skating through instruction, repetition, games, and encouragement. No previous skating experience is needed for Snowplow Sam 1.

Across Snowplow Sam levels, skaters begin with sitting and standing, getting up after a fall, marching, and balancing. As their skills develop, they work toward forward skating, gliding, backward movement, stopping, and beginning turns.

Children build confidence at different rates, and spending more than one session in a level is a normal part of the process. Parents watch from off the ice while skaters learn to participate with their instructor and classmates.

BASIC SKILLS

Build the skills to enjoy wherever skating takes you! Basic Skills develops a strong skating foundation for recreational skating, hockey and figure skating.

Basic 1 welcomes first-time skaters, beginning with getting up, balancing, moving forward, gliding, and learning to stop. Across six levels, skaters develop forward and backward skating, edges, crossovers, turns, and introductory spins and other figure-skating movements.

Whether your goal is skating with friends or preparing for a skating sport, the focus is the same: control, confidence, and solid technique.

HOCKEY

Better hockey starts with better skating. Our hockey classes focus on the skating mechanics players need to move efficiently, stay balanced, and maintain control on the ice.

Across five levels, skaters develop hockey stance, forward and backward movement, C-cuts, edge control, stops, turns, transitions, and crossovers.

Placement reflects demonstrated skating skills; team participation or years playing hockey do not automatically determine a skater’s level.

Full gear not necessary, but helmets and sticks are required and shin guards are recommended.

**Anyone not in full gear will not be permitted on the hockey side during the free time held after class.

HOCKEY PREREQUISITE: All Hockey LTS Participants must have passed Snowplow Sam 3 or Basic 2 prior to registering for any of the Hockey Classes.

adult

Whether you’re stepping onto the ice for the first time, returning after years away, or ready to improve your technique, our adult classes give you a place to learn at your own pace.

The six-level curriculum begins with balance, getting up after a fall, forward movement, gliding, and stopping. As skills develop, instruction expands into backward skating, edges, crossovers, turns, and introductory spins.

Group lessons combine instruction, practice, and individual feedback, with challenges appropriate to each skater’s current ability.

ICE ARENA SCHEDULING

As a single sheet arena, NoCo Ice Center works to schedule each event, user group and game in the most efficient way possible to maximize everyone's ice time. However, there are times such as overtime, injury or delays in hockey games when this is out of our control. We assure you that each Learn to Skate class will receive their full 30-minute class, but NoCo Ice Center will not be held responsible for start time delays due to hockey games. We apologize for the inconvenience, but appreciate your understanding and continued support.

once registered

Once you are all signed up for our great Learn to Skate Program, please make sure that you note a couple of things:

CLOTHING: Warm clothes, but jeans get coldest the quickest. Gloves and pads are strongly recommended. We do not provide any of these items.

** FACILITY POLICY: EVERYONE on the ice (participants and staff) are REQUIRED to wear Helmets! --Bike, snow/ski, or hockey helmets are all acceptable.-- Skaters without a helmet will be asked to leave the ice and will not receive credits or refunds.

ARRIVAL:  Please arrive 15-30 minutes prior to class in order to check-in and get your skater's skates on in time to meet your coach at the designated class time.

3 STEPS TO FUN!

STEP 1 -- Check-In at the Learn to Skate Desk! Tell us your name and level, please. **There may also be important information, handouts, updates, etc for you to know about.

STEP 2 -- Request your rental skates and/or get your skates on.

**Please note -- for all beginner skaters (even if your goal is hockey), we recommend figure skates until skaters can comfortably move forward, backward and on one foot because the blade is flatter and easier for beginners.

STEP 3 -- Check in with your Coach rink side or at the door to the ice.

**This will be a good time to get to know your coach as well as the new skaters learning to fall down and get up off ice first.

**Snowplow Sam 1 begins off of the ice on week 1.

A few very important reminders to parents:

1 -- Stay off of the ice in street shoes! Please get a coach's attention to get something to your child.

2 -- Keep rink door clear! This will assist in organization as well as safety.

3 -- Please watch the lessons from the lobby or the bleachers upstairs.

4 -- ONE Parent PER Tot Registered for the Parent and Tot Classes.

5 -- ONLY Registered Participants are permitted on the 15 minute practice between classes. This is not open to parents or family members.

6 -- We do not offer make-up classes.

7 -- When returning skates, please tuck in laces to assist our staff.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
